Updated About Me

About Me:

I am now a Freshman in college. I am a Studio Arts major currently experimenting in Digital media. I am currently an undergraduate of the University of Texas at Austin. I am set to graduate in 2019, and like all good Longhorns, I have the classic "horns up in front of the tower" photo.

Comic Book

Hey, so those of you who know me know that for a couple of years, I've been working on developing a story for something I plan on turning into a comic I've titled "Daisy the Reaper". The top two comic pages are from my junior year and the second two are from this year. Both have been published in my school's comic book. It's really fun to look at the two comics together. I've improved so much in just one year!

Persephone

So I finally finished my Persephone piece in tribute to Alfonse Mucha! This watercolor piece took forever, but I think it turned out pretty nicely,

More pieces from this year's concentration

A few of the final pieces from this years concentration. I took to doing a more reflective style when imitating the slides, and I found myself really happy with how these pieces turned out!

A Better Explanation of my newest Concentration

This is the fifth piece in my newest Concentration, but it was one that I desperately wanted to do. I had the idea of it in my head almost from the beginning. However, I waited until I was a few pieces in to allow myself to figure out what exactly it was I wanted to do. The slide used is one of my late grandmother, Louis Swan Jones, or Mere as I called her. She was an art historian who taught at Texas University and traveled around Europe during the 50's, 60's and 70's to document and catalog the art. This resulted in chests upon chests of slides that our family has buried away in storage. However, last summer my father and I began to sort through them. We spent many summer afternoons hunched over a light table with magnifying glasses, sorting the good slides from the bad. It wasn't until months later that I had the idea to scan a few slides in and to begin manipulating them. But, when I started, I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do, did I want to tell a story? Did I want the original picture and the old to interact? When I looked at this slide, I knew I wanted to have myself in the picture along with Mere. Which is when I thought of the idea of copying her pose and reflecting it. However, there wasn't enough room in the picture to fit the entire pose in, so I extended the photo by continuing the background just enough to fit myself in along side her. Which ended up entirely shifting the iea of my concentration, but for the better, I think.

About Me

Artist Statement

In my work, I experiment with artistic style and personality through the illustration of figures. My personal drawing style is illustrative with thick outlines and soft colors in order to tell a story. Lately, I have begun experimenting with watercolors and felt tipped pens. The permanence and lack of predictability that comes with using them together has been an experience in diving straight in to my art. When I first started drawing, I was so afraid to make a mistake that i would erase every stray line and sometimes rip the paper from overusing my erasure or put off starting a piece just so there was no chance of messing up. Now I’m allowing myself to not only make mistakes when working, but also to learn from them and grow into a more confident artist.
